A Good American Family -- David Maraniss

Staff Pick

Elliott Maraniss was a talented newspaperman when, in 1952, he was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee for his communist affiliations. He lost his job and was blacklisted for five years, yet retained his faith in the United States and went on eventually to a successful career in journalism. In A Good American Family, David Maraniss tells his dad’s story along with the stories of others who were in the Committee hearing room—members of the Committee, his dad’s lawyer, and the FBI informant who named him. Through these individual histories, David explores what it means to be an American. On one level, the book is a touching family tale about a son’s search for his father’s past, but on a larger level it’s a resonant story with enduring universal significance, a story of courage, conviction, betrayal, political opportunism, reckoning, and ultimately American identity.

The Indian World of George Washington -- Colin Calloway

Staff Pick

This fascinating work, part revisionist biography of George Washington and part social history, grounds Washington in an America still largely belonging to indigenous peoples. Calloway projects a jaded view of our founding father as a wicked, deceitful, malevolent and even murderous brigand. Calloway’s book is a welcome reevaluation of Washington as well as an excellent exhumation of the role of indigenous Americans in the early republic.

Women: Our Story -- DK

Staff Pick

Often with coffee table books, I’ll flip through them, think “hey this is cool”, and ultimately ponder “but do I really need to own this?” The answer for this book was easy: yes. Yes I do need to own this and get everyone I know to own it, too. Following a timeline from 600ce to present day, Women: Our Story spans the globe and touches on the other side of the past; from the worship of goddesses and female pharaohs, to the important roles of women in world wars and politics today. Artists, musicians, religious leaders, royalty, pioneers, and martyrs: this is a book of herstory.
