Someone - Alice McDermott

Alice McDermott’s wise and tender novel, Someone (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, $25), is the distillation of a woman’s life from childhood to old age. We first meet Marie as she sits on the stoop of her Brooklyn house waiting for her father to get home from work, and later come to see how her middle-class Irish-Catholic family forms the core of her being. Moving among various key points of her life—early friendship, first love, first job, deaths of loved ones, raising a family—we witness the formation of her character as the world she knows changes around her. McDermott elegantly evinces the joys and heartbreaks of family and community, capturing the wonder and strangeness of a seemingly ordinary life.

Dirty Love - Andre Dubus III

The four novellas of Andre Dubus III’s Dirty Love (W.W. Norton, $25.95) are emotionally resonant and searingly honest narratives of obsession, longing, and regret. Hailing from a small town north of Boston, the characters in these interconnected stories are distinctly human and sensitively rendered. We see ourselves in them, for better and for worse. Whether it’s the corporate manager investigating his wife’s adultery, or the bartender/would-be poet cheating on his pregnant wife, or the high school girl hiding from her shame after an unfortunate episode while waiting tables and studying for her GED, we recognize a distinct human grandeur in the characters’ weakness. Each piece in this volume is wonderfully entertaining, but at its core the collection shows an amazing understanding of the way people live, think, and feel.

The Woman Who Lost Her Soul - Bob Shacochis

Bob Shacochis’s The Woman Who Lost her Soul (Atlantic Monthly, $28) is a complex and multi-layered novel, full of intrigue, romance, politics, and unforgettable characters. When a woman is found apparently murdered on a roadside in Haiti, her identity is revealed to be that of the daughter of a high-ranking U.S. government official. In telling the stories of both father and daughter, Shacochis takes us to the final days of World War II in Yugoslavia, to clandestine affairs in Istanbul, and into the chaos and squalor of Haiti after the 1991 coup, creating a world where identities are slippery and nothing is quite what it seems. Besides being a great story, this book is an intelligently nuanced take on power and politics in the second half of the twentieth century.
