Jim Henson: The Biography - Brian Jay Jones

Jim Henson: The Biography (Ballantine, $35) is one of my favorite books of the season. Any educator or entertainment aficionado will treasure this exquisite homage to Henson, with its inspired and reverent walk through the creative impulse that drove his imaginative exploration of the field of television and innovative, masterful contributions to Sesame Street and Muppets Inc. Brian Jay Jones’s exquisitely crafted and descriptive storytelling—which has the support and endorsement of Henson’s family, friends, and collaborators—brings a sense of magic and wonder to the unfolding of Henson’s life, from his local beginnings at the University of Maryland and WRC, behind the scenes descriptions of famous and not-so-familiar sketches, to his international fame.

The Lowland - Jhumpa Lahiri

The Lowland (Knopf, $27.95) is a masterful tale rooted in the close relationship of two brothers who nonetheless take different paths. Udayan remains in Calcutta to support Naxalite reform, while Subhash seeks an education in marine chemistry in Rhode Island. The narrative builds slowly, gracefully making the reader aware of connections, shifting moods, intentions, and impressions—footprints in cement and on a beach, letters on a wall and on the pages of a journal, for instance. What endures? What fades? Jhumpa Lahiri’s light touch in character development has a gradual, but undeniable, cumulative power, and by the end of this multi-generational saga that extends over two continents, readers are fully invested in the many subtle changes that ultimately spark cataclysmic moments of crisis, irrevocably altering these characters’ lives.

The History of Cycling in Fifty Bikes: From the Velocipede to the Pinarello - Tom Ambrose

With Capital Bikeshare, enthusiasm for two-wheels is reaching the mainstream in D.C., so what better time to revisit where the vehicle has been—as the working man’s horse, a leisure activity, or the athlete’s rocket. If you loved It’s All About the Bike, Tom Ambrose’s encyclopedic new book provides more of the developments and stories that made Robert Penn’s previous journey through bicycle construction and design so fascinating. The History of Cycling in Fifty Bikes (Rodale, $25) is an illustrated compendium chock-full of photographs, inventors, and technical developments that show how bicycles are both elegant and innovative.
