Modern Romance - Aziz Ansari

I’m familiar with Aziz’s standup and TV characters, so I picked up Modern Romance expecting to laugh a lot. I did, but what I didn’t count on was how much I would learn. Ansari’s trademark excitable humor acts as a palatable sidekick to a nobler goal than mere comedy. He blends the laughs with some actual sociological insights into relationships in the 21st century—how has technology changed us? What are the differences in the ways millennials pursue love versus the way their grandparents found it? He answers these questions, and raises other important ones for you to dwell on—and still gets you to chuckle the entire time.

Moranthology - Caitlin Moran

If you’ve glanced at my other staff picks, you’ll see I am a huge fan of Caitlin Moran. She is a blue collar Nora Ephron, a Tina Fey from the wrong side of the tracks, but even funnier. Everytime I read her work, I cackle with glee. Moranthology is no exception to the cackling. Moranthology is a collection of Moran’s most beloved articles from the various British publications she writes for. Topics range from an interview with Lady Gaga in a sex club in Berlin to the importance of social services for low income households in Britain. Moran’s approach to each topic is entertaining and refreshing- and full of bite. (This anthology is a must read for fans of How to Be a Woman and How to Build a Girl!)
