She's Not There: A Life in Two Genders - Jennifer Finney Boylan

First of all, this is one of the best memoirs I've ever read. There's just so much emotional honesty, straight facts, genuine warmth, and strong craft between these pages. It may seem ironic, but I have learned more about what it is like to be a woman physically and mentally by reading this book more than anything I have read before. I do not claim to be an expert, but in my opinion, it is a superb primer for you or anyone you know who is questioning their identity or has questions about transitioning in general.
