In Other Rooms, Other Wonders - Daniyal Mueenuddin

This book of short stories by the Pakistani-American writer is a powerful and accomplished debut. The collection deals with country life, big landowners, their retainers, and poor relatives. A few of the stories tell about people navigating the East-West differences. In the longest piece, Lily, a young woman, tries to find stability after realizing that her party-life is at a dead end. The title story is about a poor relative of K.K. Harouni, whose estate near Lahore forms the backdrop of many of the stories. On one hand modern Pakistan is front and center, and on the other, the humanity common to any people makes the characters recognizable.
