A handful of books should be required reading for all Americans, and Just Mercy by civil rights attorney Bryan Stevenson is one of them. In this memoir about his career defending poor people on death row—including juveniles—Stevenson tells the stories of his clients and their cases to illuminate the hidden and haunting realities of the American criminal justice system. Beautifully told and deeply personal, yet never sensational or overly dramatic, his story’s strength rests on the individual portraits of his clients and the urgency of his message. It is hard to imagine a lawyer more dedicated, resilient, or humane than Bryan Stevenson. And it is impossible to read his book without being changed by it.
