Cold NIghts of Childhood by Tezer Özlü

Staff Pick

Playing out in fragments and weaving back and forth through time and place, Özlü's impressionistic and vivid tale evokes one woman’s struggle for a life of freedom and happiness against the forces of patriarchy and misogyny that seek to stifle women's voices. Özlü’s prose in Maureen Freely’s English translation reflects the claustrophobic nature of this text, depicting scenes of horror--including the narrator's physical abuse in a psychiatric hospital. Yet there is also hope in the protagonist’s continued rebellion against those would keep her imprisoned; this is a compelling piece of Turkish fiction that deserves a wide readership.
