The Brush by Eliana Hernández-Pachón

Staff Pick

Hernández-Pachón's fierce and harrowing volume perfectly renders the grief and rage experienced by the Colombian people not only for the particular massacre evoked here, but for the many other acts of violence perpetrated by those in power. During February 2000, Colombian paramilitary elements, assisted by state security forces, descended on the village of El Salado and committed a brutal massacre which resulted in the killing of 60 people and the torture and rape of many more. This slim volume is a testament to the power of poetry as an act of witness and remembrance.
