Navy Yard and Culture House DC - SOLD OUT

From breakthrough invention to street art

Sunday, November 3, from 10:00 a.m. to noon

Did you know that Pope Benedict XVI held mass at Nats Park? Or that the main water pumping station is on the National Register of Historic Places?

Join Andréa Seiger and John Dean, author and photographer of 111 Places in Washington That You Must Not Miss guidebook for a walk through the photogenic, vibrant and ever-changing Navy Yard neighborhood that lies along the Anacostia River, once intended to be part of a deep water port. It is anchored by the US Navy Yard, the oldest continuously operating Navy shore installation in the United States, and Nationals Park.

Walk along the outskirts of the base with an eye towards the US Navy Museum, home to the 1950s submersible that to date has dived the furthest into the deepest part of the ocean than any other; a fine collection of model ships; and a kamikaze training plane.  The story of an entombed Civil War officer’s leg in the wall of an ordnance factory nearby is weird but true.

Look up, down and around at the timeline, signs and hands on objects that are the Walking Transportation Museum, a park full of objects meant to be played on, touched, turned and photographed while considering the history of transportation. See where the Capitals swam with the Stanley Cup, and hark back to the days of some of DCs biggest and most renowned nightclubs.

The last stop is Culture House DC, a salvaged historic church enveloped in a psychedelic mural that encompasses the entire building, turned arts and event venue. The interior is covered in murals created by artists from the world over, including dueling lion heads framing the stage in what was once the sanctuary. The rotating gallery features contemporary and street art, that is often brought to life with interactive elements and music.

Bring your camera, whether a 35mm SLR or a cell phone, and learn some of John’s tips on capturing the best shots.

We will meet at Navy Yard - Ballpark Metro station, at the M St & NJ Ave SE exit (NOT the ballpark exit) and end near the SW Waterfront Metro station. There is public parking near both metro stations. Bring your Metro farecard. This walk is 2 – 2.5 miles on flat terrain.
