NEW CLASSICAL      

 

BEETHOVEN: DIABELLI VARIATIONS (Decca, $14.98) – Mitsuko Uchida in an epic traversal of the Diabelli Variations. This was Gramophone Magazine’s Recording of the Month in their May issue, a “breathtakingly extravagant display of intellect and imagination.” 

 

RAVEL: CONCERTOS / MÉLODIES (Harmonia Mundi, $19.98) – Conductor François-Xavier Roth and his period-instrument ensemble, Les Siècles, play some of Ravel’s major works. Cédric Tiberghien plays an 1892 Pleyel piano in the Concerto in G major and the Concerto for Left Hand in D major. Tiberghien and baritone Stéphane Degout team up on sets of Ravel’s songs.  

 

SIBELIUS (Decca, 4 CDs, $31.98) – Klaus Mäkelä conducts the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra in Siberlius’s complete Symphonies and Tapiola, Op 112. 

 

 

WILLIAM BOLCOM: THE COMPLETE RAGS (Hyperion, 2 CDs, $29.98) – Pianist Marc-André Hamelin explores Bolcom’s “lifelong and affectionate homage to—and continuation of—the archetypal American genre”

Ches Smith, INTERPRET IT WELL (Pyroclastic, $16.98) – Drummer/vibraphonist/percussionist Ches Smith added to his trio with pianist Craig Taborn and violist Mat Maneri by inviting guitarist Bill Frisell for their new album. 

 

 

Angel Olsen, BIG TIME (Jagjaguwar, $14.98) – Angel Olsen explores themes of loss and grief tied to the death of her parents.  

 

 

Andrew Bird, INSIDE PROBLEMS (Loma Vista, $14.98) – Singer-songwriter, violinist and whistler Andrew Bird  

 

The Linda Lindas, GROWING UP (Epitath, $12.98) – The teenaged girls in Linda Lindas achieved wide recognition with their no-holds-barred performance of “Racist Sexist Boy” at the L.A. Public Library. The next generation continues and extends the punk/riot girl tradition.
