NEW JAZZ 

Wayne Shorter, Terri Lyne Carrington, Leo Genovese, Esperanza Spalding, LIVE AT THE DETROIT JAZZ FESTIVAL (Candid, $15.98) – This special performance, from September 3, 2017, featured saxophonist Wayne Shorter, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington, Leo Genovese on keyboards, and bassist esperanza spalding. The performers paid tribute to pianist Geri Allen--who was to play with the group, but died unexpectedly that June—with her composition, “Drummers Song.” The rest of the set includes Shorter tunes, as well as “Encontros e Despedidas” by Milton Nascimento. 

Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Christian McBride, Brian Blade, LONGGONE (Nonesuch, $15.98) – The members of the legendary original 1990s Joshua Redman Quartet—Redman (saxophone), Brad Mehldau (piano), Christian McBride (bass), and Brian Blade (drums)—reunited after twenty-six years for 2020’s RoundAgain. Since those formative days almost 30 years ago, each member has become highly influential as an innovator and bandleader. 

They now return with LongGone, featuring six original songs by Redman.  

 

NEW POP 

Lake Street Dive, FUN MACHINE: THE SEQUEL (Fantasy, $12.98) – Vocalist Rachael Price and Lake Street Dive release a six-song covers album, with tunes made famous by Carole King, Dionne Warwick, the Cranberries, Bonnie Raitt, the Pointer Sisters, and Shania Twain. 

John Legend, LEGEND (Republic, 2 CDs, $20.98) – EGOT member John Legend has a new double album with guests Saweetie, Rick Ross, Muni Long, Jazmine Sullivan, Rapsody, Ledisi, Jhene Aiko, Ty Dolla $ign and more. 

 

NEW CLASSICAL 

Yuja Wang, Andreas Ottensamer, Gautier Capuçon, RACHMANINOV & BRAHMS (Deutsche Grammophon, $14.98) – A trio of stars on piano, clarinet and cello play Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata in G Minor, Op. 19, and Brahms’s Cello Sonata No. 1 in E Minor, Op. 38 and Clarinet Trio in A Minor, Op. 114. 

BEETHOVEN: SYMPHONIES 1 – 9 (Deutsche Grammophon, 5 CDs, $50.98) – Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in Beethoven’s symphonies.

HAYDN: PIANO SONATAS VOL. 11 (Chandos, $18.99) – Jean-Efflam Bavouzet continues his traversal of Haydn’s keyboard works.
