Charles Lloyd, TRIOS: SACRED THREAD (Blue Note, $13.98) - The third of saxophonist/flutist/bandleader Charles Lloyd’s three Trio albums this year, each with a different cast (all three include a guitarist). Trios: Sacred Thread features guitarist Julian Lage and tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain. Gorgeous music.
The previous volumes are Trios: Ocean (guitarist Anthony Wilson and pianist Gerald Clayton) and Trios: Chapel (with guitarist Bill Frisell and bassist Thomas Morgan).

Elvin Jones, REVIVAL: LIVE AT POOKIE’S PUB (Blue Note, 2 CDs, $30.98) – Elvin Jones was a powerhouse—one of the most influential drummers in jazz history, highlighted by his tenure in John Coltrane’s classic quartet in the early 1960s. Recorded July 28-30, 1967 at Pookie’s Pub, New York (less than two weeks after the death of John Coltrane), Mr. Jones’s quartet included Joe Farrell on tenor sax and flute, Billy Greene on piano, and Wilbur Little on bass (organ great Larry Young sits in on piano on “Gingerbread Boy”). The package includes a 56-page booklet with photos, new interviews, and liner notes by author Ashley Kahn.
Billy Strings, ME/AND/DAD (Rounder, $15.98) – The young bluegrass guitar wizard teams up with his father, Terry Barber, on traditional, country, and bluegrass favorites. Songs include “Long Journey Home,” “Stone Walls and Steel Bars,” “Little Cabin Home on the Hill,” and “Way Downtown.”
