Timothy Egan - A Pilgrimage to Eternity: From Canterbury to Rome in Search of a Faith

Upcoming Event
Sunday, October 20, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Winner of a Pulitzer Prize for reporting and the National Book Award for The Worst Hard Time, Egan in his new book combines narrative history and biography with memoir and travel to recount his journey along the Via Francigena, once the major medieval trail leading the devout to Rome. Motivated by his mother’s death and his complicated relationship with his Irish Catholicism, Egan walked the thousand-mile pilgrimage route to St. Peter’s Square in order to explore the past and future of Christianity. As he talks with fellow pilgrims, visits the chapel where Christianity was introduced to pagan Britain, and views the sites of miracles, he works to discover the meaning of faith in the secular world.
