Susan Schneider - Artificial You: AI and the Future of Your Mind & Flynn Coleman - A Human Algorithm: How Artificial Intelligence Is Redefining Who We Are — at Politics and Prose at The Wharf

Upcoming Event
Wednesday, October 2, 2019 - 7:00pm to 8:00pm

As director of the AI, Mind and Society Group at the University of Connecticut and NASA/Baruch Blumberg Chair at the Library of Congress, Schneider has been on the forefront of research that promises to change human intelligence in radically new ways. In this thorough examination of what AI can and cannot achieve, Schneider considers questions such as whether robots can really be conscious and if the mind is only a program. Behind these matters, however, lie the larger ones of what exactly consciousness, self, and mind are; not just philosophical concerns, these will soon be the tools designers use to reshape the human mind.

With AI on track to profoundly change how we work, interact, and understand what it means to be human, Coleman argues that we need to establish an ethical framework for the new world we’re advancing. An international human rights lawyer and social innovator, Coleman is optimistic that we can create a future supportive of human rights, equality, and empathy by instilling these core values into the algorithms we design. This will require the participation of diverse voices both in developing these smart technologies and in formulating policies to protect us from any unforeseen threats in these unprecedented devices.
