Megan Phelps-Roper - Unfollow: A Memoir of Loving and Leaving the Westboro Baptist Church

Upcoming Event
Saturday, October 26, 2019 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Phelps-Roper grew up as a member of the Westboro Baptist Church, the hate group her grandfather founded in Topeka, Kansas. Fully indoctrinated with the group’s fervent homophobia, anti-Semitism, and extremist agenda, Phelps-Roper was protesting at age five and later spoke for the church on social media. But by opening Twitter dialogues with people outside Westboro, Phelps-Roper began to question her beliefs, and in 2012 she left the church and became an activist and educator on topics related to extremism and communication across ideological lines. Her eye-opening memoir is an inspiring account of a remarkable personal transformation.
