Kristen Richardson - The Season: A Social History of the Debutante

Upcoming Event
Saturday, November 23, 2019 - 3:30pm to 4:30pm

Building on her Rookie article, "The Last Debutantes," Richardson offers an engaging and surprising history of the high society coming-out party. The descendant of debutantes but not one herself, Richardson casts a critical feminist eye over this coming-of-age ritual.  Starting with the Tudor era and looking at Jane Austen’s England, colonial Philadelphia, Mrs. Astor’s New York, African American communities, and today’s Infirmary and International balls, Richardson draws on diaries, letters, and interviews to let debutantes speak for themselves about how the white dresses and objectification foster or thwart their own desires.
