Don’t Look Back is Achut Deng’s gripping memoir of her childhood in Sudan where, as a refugee, she fought daily for survival, fleeing the country on foot and eventually escaping to a new life in America. Her account paints a picture of a world that can be both splendid and cruel. When an attack destroys her village, separating her from her entire family, Achut is forced into a refugee camp at only six-years-old.  She was there for ten years before a refugee relocation program brought her to America. But this was not the end of her trials, as life as an outsider in her new country came with its own dangers and obstacles. Through it all, Achut chose life, and continued moving forward even as the ghosts of her past still haunted her.

Achut Deng was born in South Sudan and came to America as a refugee when she was sixteen years old. She is now an American citizen and works in human resources at a meat-packing plant in South Dakota, where she also resides. She is the mother of three sons.

Amna Nawaz is the chief correspondent and Friday White House correspondent for the PBS NewsHour, which she joined in 2018. She lives with her husband and two daughters in the Washington, D.C. area.
