ONLINE CLASS: Walter Mosley’s Easy Rawlins Series (2144)

Four Saturdays: April 24 and May 1, 8, 15 from noon to 2 p.m. EST

Price:
$120 (10% off for members)

The publication of Walter Mosley’s first novel, Devil in a Blue Dress (1990), introduces the detective Easy Rawlins: suave, debonair, and successfully flawed. With this first novel, Mosley enters the crime and mystery genres and builds a series based on Easy Rawlins that harkens to predecessors Dashiell Hammett and Chester Himes. But Mosley expands the tapestry by unveiling and complicating the diverse political and social landscapes of post-Second World War Los Angeles. Since 1990, Mosley has published more than 60 books with 15 of them comprising the Easy Rawlins series.

In this class, we will read and discuss four books from Mosley’s Easy Rawlins series: Devil in a Blue Dress, Black Betty, Little Green, and Charcoal Joe. We will examine noir as a literary element in crime fiction and consider the plausibility of noir in Mosley’s novels as a form of social protest. Mosley is the recipient of many distinguished awards including several NAACP Image Awards, the Edgar Award, and the National Book Foundation’s 2020 Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters (DCAL). Four Saturdays: April 24 and May 1, 8, 15  from noon to 2 p.m. EST Online Class.
