Discussion Based off of the Films and Novels

Film versions of beloved novels frequently provoke intense fan debates over the minutiae of the adaptation, but often the larger implications of the adaptor’s vision get overlooked. Peter Jackson’s immensely popular three-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings offers an interpretation of Tolkien’s work that is worth consideration both in how it parallels and it departs from Tolkien’s own creation of Middle-earth in the original novel on thematic levels. We will discuss the general principles that underlie the process of adapting existing novels into film, then apply such ideas to a consideration of one movie per week: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King. Discussion will be based on the extended versions of the films, rather than the initial theatrical release versions.
