Welfare systems are rapidly changing in East Asia. However, little is known about citizens' views regarding who should provide welfare and why. This original volume considers welfare attitudes in East Asia with a decolonial lens and a focus on Singapore and Beijing. It explores the influence of contextual and individual factors, such as family roles and values, on citizens' welfare attitudes. It also explores social legitimacy and social bonds to understand how to design and implement sustainable welfare policies. Traditionally, comparative welfare attitude studies used Western based concepts and measurements. This book proposes new methods for analysing cross-national variations in welfare attitudes which are sensitive to cultural differences, the impact of colonialism and gender.
Trude Sundberg is a Senior Lecturer Social Policy in the School of Social Policy, Sociology and Social Research at the University of Kent and Director of the University of Kent's Q-Step Centre.
